Names of God: Shield by Robin Densmore Fuson
God is our shield. This is another attribute which can
be considered one of His names.
As for God, His way is perfect; the word of the Lord is proven. He is a shield to all who
trust in Him (Psalm 18:30 nkjv).
His way is perfect. His word is proven. Those are
promises to rest in.
We will look at the last part of the verse and zero in
on—the Lord is called a shield. Another attribute of His is being a shield for
us.
What do you think of when I say shield? Do you picture
a soldier raising a shield up for protection against enemy weapons, darts, and
arrows?
Or do you think of a shield as a shelter? Ancient
soldiers used a large shield to sleep under like a protective canopy.
God is our protector. Thank You Father!
The end of the verse says: He is a shield to all who
trust in Him. His part is to be the Shield and our part is to Trust in Him.
Trust in Him. What? Relax in the knowledge He is in
control. Trust in Him as our Savior, knowing He died to pay for our sin, and He
is the only way to heaven. Another word for it is faith.
Another verse we will talk about is Psalm 84:11 in the
(nkjv) For the Lord God is a sun and shield; the Lord will give grace and glory; no good
thing will He withhold from those who walk uprightly.
Again, we see He is our Shield and this verse also
says; He is our sun, which is a reference to his provision. The sun gives life
and warmth to the planet. God is over the sun and rain and wind, all the elements
we need for sustained life.
So we see that He is a shield—our protector and a
sun—our provision. He gives grace and glory and good things. That is His part,
but also in the verse, our part is to walk uprightly. What does that mean?
Obeying the Lord. Having integrity which is becoming
rare in our culture. When you say something, stand by it. Matthew 5:37 in the kjv says, “make your yay, yay, and your
nay, nay.” In other words, when you say yes, stick to that. Don’t make empty
promises. We need to stay faithful to our vows. That is also becoming a rare
thing. A handshake on a promise, and “I do” at the altar are vows that need to
be kept. Our word needs to be reliable.
Another verse that
supports the Lord being our shield is: You are my hiding place and my shield; I
hope in Your word (Psalm 119:114 nkjv).
Again, there is God’s
part and our part. Many verses in the Bible are twofold—God and us.
We need to hope or rest
in the confidence of God’s Word where He describes Himself and gives
instruction and promises that He always keeps.
So, rest in these promises of Who He is as our Shield or Protector, and Sun equals Provision but don’t forget to do your part—Trust in Him, Walk Uprightly, and hope or have faith in Him and His word.
