Light vs. Darkness by Robin Densmore Fuson

Inside my closet, I searched for a particular top I wanted to wear. I ended up straightening things and reorganizing. When I opened the door, I realized I neglected to turn on the light in my bedroom and darkness descended while I worked in the closet.

When I opened the door, the darkness didn’t fall into the brightly lit room. It didn’t swallow up the light. I didn’t worry that I would be in the dark for long. The light from the closet penetrated the darkness, creating a long rectangle shape that gave me enough light to get to the switch and illuminate the room.

The same is true if I light a candle in a dark room or use a flashlight in the woods at night. Light penetrates. The darkness doesn’t snuff out the light.

When God created light, In Genesis 1, He spoke it into existence. He created light for mankind and all created things to function well and see. Light becomes a comfort. This is the first kind of light, a physical kind.

Jesus took it a step further to introduce the spiritual kind of light. In John 8:12, Jesus said He is the light of the world. In that statement, Jesus declared that He alone is the spiritual light of this dark world. He is the only one to dispel the darkness of sin. He referred to himself as the only way to live in light forever.

Jesus came to earth to give us spiritual life and light.

Ever since Adam disobeyed God and sinned and ate from the tree, sin came into the world. The world harbored sin and darkness. Most crimes are done in the dark. Most sin is committed in the secret parts where light isn’t flooding—behind closed doors—so to speak.

We are all born sinners, Romans 3:23. Romans 3:10 says, “there is none righteous, no, not one. Darkness.”

“This is the condemnation, that light has come into the world, and men love darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil” (John 3:19 nkjv).

We are born with a lost soul drowning in darkness. We need the light of Jesus.

Jesus came to dispel darkness. We trust what Jesus did for us on the cross and we become a child of God. Jesus lives in us through the Holy Spirit. His light shines bright in our lives. When we have a relationship with him, we cannot sin while praying. Darkness cannot penetrate light.

Do you have the Light of the world living in you? Are you now in the light?
