During the night, I listen to the Bible. It takes a little over a week for Genesis1 through Revelation 22 to play out. For the past four years, I’ve been lulled into peaceful sleep with a soothing voice reading from the word of God. One night, I focused in on a list of names.

I know, I’ know, there are a lot of names—genealogies and a record of those that were taken away by Babylon, and another for those who came back. Names of officials and warriors. There are lists of priests and people who tended the temple, musicians, even gatekeepers. So many roll calls but this one in 1 Chronicles 27 caught my attention.

The list ran through names of people who were in charge of precious articles. Men who were in overseers of others who worked the fields and vineyards and who made the wine. Instrumental people who took care of the olive and fig trees. There were names of people who took care of cattle, camels, and donkeys. Last, but not least, Jaziz.

A shepherd Jaziz was in charge of the King’s flocks of sheep and goats. Flocks plural. In King David’s kingdom, even the shepherd was important to list.

Hm. He had an important job. Goats and sheep were bred for food, milk, skins, and sacrifice. In the Old Testament, atonement for sin involved sacrificing a lamb.

Thank You Lord Jesus for being the perfect sacrifice to pay for every sin by every person who ever lived or will live.

Jaziz had an important job. He worked for the King. I’m sure as a previous shepherd, David might have taken walks in the sheep pastures. He probably spoke to Jaziz many times.

If you’ve received Jesus as your Savior and have a personal relationship with him, you work for the King!

Your job is important. You help Jesus the King take care of his flock. You do this by showing the love for others. By demonstrating the fruit of the Spirit and by being a good friend. You do this by sharing the love of Jesus with your life, testimony, imparting God’s word, and praying for others.

You may not be a pastor or teacher in a Christian organization but you can still show God’s love everywhere you go. We teach by example and by doing good works. We teach through a smile and an encouraging word. You work for the King and King Jesus wants us to spread His love.

So you are important. God chose you. You are just as important as Jaziz.

Jaziz the Hagrite was in charge of the King’s flocks of sheep and goats. All these officials were overseers of King David’s property (1Chronoicles 27:31nlt).

You were cleansed from your sins when you obeyed the truth, so now you must show sincere love to each other as brothers and sisters. Love each other deeply with all your heart (1Peter 1:22nlt).

"Your love for one another will prove to the world that you are my disciples" (John 13:35nlt).
