My Review of A Shepherd Looks At Psalm 23 by W. Phillip Keller

Psalm 23 starts with the Lord is my Shepherd. Yahweh-Rohi Jehovah Rohi is my Shepherd.

I read this book years ago and reread it recently as a companion book with a group study on Psalm 23 by Louie Giglio, please see my review of that book also.

This book follows each verse with a shepherd’s point of view. The writer, Keller speaks from experience as he was a shepherd. King David who penned Psalm 23 also spent time as a shepherd.

Knowing the Lord is our shepherd is comforting. A good shepherd guides, protects, cares for, and loves his sheep. The Lord Jesus is the perfect Shepherd who knows what we need when we need it.

This book paints pictures of a shepherd who cares for his individual sheep according to their individual needs and temperament. He leads his flock to green pastures and clean water and guides them from harm. He goes after stray lambs and stubborn sheep. The stories in A Shepherd Looks At Psalm 23 are heartwarming and poignant.

The shepherd uses tools of the trade in his hand-made staff and rod. I especially love chapter 8 where Keller describes how the shepherd makes his rod, and how he uses it. What a comfort.

Another tool is oil. Sheep need oil to protect them from pests like flies. We also need anointing.

This book brings to life the very nature of the shepherd using each word in the most quoted and favorite Psalm. I wish there were a hundred stars so for this book. I will settle for five.
