Pep Talk by Robin Densmore Fuson

Do you talk to yourself? I do. I find myself having a mental running commentary on my actions or when I’m trying to remind myself of something I repeat things in my head of the list of things to get done.

Unfortunately, sometimes I’m not so nice to myself when I do something wrong or forget something. I may call myself names or berate myself. Instead of saying things like, “Oops” or, I forgot. Or not say anything to myself.

I keep rehearsing things that I need to let go.

King David in the Bible spoke to himself. He addressed his soul.

Psalm 42:11a NKJV

Why are you cast down, O my soul?

And why are you disquieted within me?

He asked his soul a question.

The big question: Why?

Do we or should we question our souls? What exactly is our soul? Soul is our heart. Not the organ that beats. It’s our being. In other words, it’s our mind, will, and emotions. It is who we are. Our essence.

Do we take time to stop and ask ourselves why we are feeling the way we do? Or why we are thinking this way or that?

Why am I angry? Why am I afraid? Why am I anxious? Why am I hurt? Do we analyze what we believe? And why we believe it? Do we take everything at face value without examining it? The media tells us to believe a certain way. Should we? Do we swallow it as truth?

Shouldn’t we ask ourselves, is this right? Does it honor my core belief?  Is it moral? Does it honor our creator?

Shouldn’t we stop and ask ourselves these questions? Do more research? Check the Bible? Pray about it?

When we start a negative self-talk, we need to change it to a pep talk. We need to redirect ourselves.

Lets look at the end of Psalm 42:11where David told his soul how to get out of the blues. Out of the downer. He said, soul,

Hope in God;

For I shall yet praise Him,

The help of my countenance and my God.

When we turn to God and praise Him he helps our countenance our outlook. Or soul gets the positive uplifting all because our focus is now on the Lord.

David self-talked in:

Psalm 103: 1,2

Bless the Lord, O my soul;

And all that is within me, bless His holy name!

2Bless the Lord, O my soul,

And forget not all His benefits:

Psalm 104:1a

Bless the Lord , Oh my soul

Psalm 116:7

Return to your rest, O my soul,

For the Lord has dealt bountifully with you.

We all need to give ourselves a pep talk by turning our negative talk into praise and adoration of our Creator and Redeemer, savior, Jesus Christ.

So the next time you are down, look up and praise the Lord.
